Glynn had never operated a motorised vehicle before receiving training on a specially-adapted fork lift at Enham 3rd Party Logistics (E3PL). He says E3PL has 'transformed' his life.
Finding employment has not been easy for Glynn, who has with learning difficulties.
"Before working at Enham Trust and 3PL, I was just plodding along in life. I was living at home with my parents and was in and out of work for a long time. I flitted between jobs and couldn’t find anything which suited me, and I found certain aspects of work really difficult, like completing paperwork."
But now, thanks to leading disability charity Enham Trust, Glynn has a job he loves and is developing essential professional skills. He works as a full-time warehouse operative at Enham 3rd Party Logistics (E3PL) in Andover, a commercially-run social enterprise managed by Enham Trust that offers nationwide contract packing services. Key clients include tea manufacturer Twinings, luxury brand Fortnum & Mason and high street store TKMaxx, to name a few.
"Since I got the job with Enham 3PL a year ago, my confidence has had a huge boost. I’m given more time to complete tasks and the management style is very patient and flexible. My colleagues and I help each other out, too."
Recently, Glynn and three other warehouse operatives received training on a specially-adapted fork lift. The vehicle, manufactured by Linde, is incredibly easy to operate and manoeuvre and has been modified with additional safety features. Before completing the three-day course, Glynn had never operated a motorised vehicle before.
Enabling safety features
The additional safety features include a constant audible warning when the truck is in motion and a large blue visual driving path warning device – ‘Bluespot’ – which encourages safety in aisles. These adaptions alert both visually and audibly impaired staff to the truck’s proximity. The truck’s stroboscopic flashing beacon can also be switched off when operating around staff with epilepsy.
Peter Brandom, Senior Area Sales Manager for Linde Material Handling, says:
"Listening to our customers’ needs is vital and safety is of paramount importance within the working environment. With Enham 3rd Party Logistics we were able to offer an ergonomic truck which is comfortable and has easy-to-use fingertip hydraulic controls. Linde’s flexibility means we can adapt equipment to the needs of both operators and employees, supplying bespoke solutions for clients like E3PL, Lawrence and his colleagues."
The boost Glynn has received from this new-found confidence in his own abilities – coupled with real investment from his employer - is undeniable. And it is a perfect example of Enham Trust’s strapline – ‘the power of yes’ – in action; pushing boundaries and redefining what is possible.
Mike Batchelor, Operations Manager of Enham 3PL, says:
"The positive impact we have made on Glynn's life is a true reflection of the ‘power of yes’ here at Enham Trust. With the great support of Linde and the local training outfit ADR Training SE Ltd we managed to give Lawrence a career. I’m very proud of my team who have worked hard to make this all happen!"
Steady employment has given Glynn control and independence. No longer 'plodding through life', he now has a place of his own, too.
"This has transformed my life. Thanks to Enham Trust, I’ll turn my hand to anything. I want to 'have a go'! Working here has opened up so many new ideas and opportunities."
